Grain conditioning experiments

Posted by

At the beginning of our career as brewers (about 2 years ago) we experimented with conditioned grains to boost the efficiency of our brewery (which was really rubbish).

In those days we used steam which we forced through the grains, this worked well for the efficiency of the brewery at the time but the process was anything but simple and only suitable for small grain bills.

Now we have a real brewery with good efficiency but no harm in going higher and above all we want to minimize the risk of a stuck sparge.

So when we bought a new mill from KegLand and the manual recommended conditioning of the grains before milling, we started experimenting again, this time by spraying water over the dry grains and stirring at the same time.

The result is actually quite interesting and we will test this technique on the next brew.

We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves!
